How to Hire Front-of-House Staff Without Wasting Hours

restaurant hiring system - job interview

Hiring FOH staff shouldn’t feel like a second full-time job. But far too many restaurant owners get stuck rewriting job ads, chasing flaky applicants, and hosting endless interviews that go nowhere— and don’t worry; if this is you, you’re not alone.

The truth? Most restaurant hiring systems aren’t systems at all. They’re a bunch of one-off tasks patched together in a panic.

If you want to save time and actually attract great people, it’s time to approach hiring differently. Here’s how to get hours of your week back while building a stronger team.

1. Start With a Job Ad That Filters for Fit

Generic job ads get generic (or no) applicants. You don’t need 100 résumés—you need the right 5 people.

Tip: Spend some time and write your ad like you’re talking directly to your ideal hire. Be real. Be clear about what makes your place different, and what kind of personality thrives with you. THEN make sure you keep a copy – it’s worth spending time here to make something you are happy with and can continue to use as you need to hire more people in the future.

2. Use Application Questions to Screen Fast

Don’t waste time sorting through irrelevant résumés. Add 2–3 short questions to your application that show you how they think, not just where they worked.

Example:

“What’s one thing you think makes service feel personal?”
“Why do you want to work in hospitality?”

These are gold for spotting attitude and alignment. Depending on which platform you are using (i.e. Indeed, 86Network, etc.) there are even options to gatekeep your applications with hard limits (like a minimum amount of experience or a pre-existing certificate), making your restaurant hiring system much cleaner and more streamlined.

3. Automate Your Interview Booking Routine

Tired of ghosting? Use automation (or templates) to follow up once, and move on. No more chasing, no more back and forth, no more emailing each applicant three times each trying to set up a time that works.

Bonus: Automate replies to thank applicants and set appointments in your calendar. Tools like Google Forms, Indeed autoresponders, Calendly, or even email templates can do this.

4. Pre-Screen With Short Video or Phone Checks

You don’t need to meet everyone in person. A quick 5-minute phone or video response can save hours of interview time and show you how they communicate. Combined with the process above for streamlining appointments, this can become a potent tool to sift through dozens or even hundreds of applications efficiently.

5. Batch Your Hiring Process

Instead of reacting every time someone quits, set a weekly or bi-weekly rhythm for reviewing applicants, sending interviews, and onboarding.

This shifts hiring from emergency-mode to a repeatable, efficient routine.

Conclusion:

Hiring doesn’t have to be painful—or take over your week. With the right tools and structure, you can build your own restaurant hiring system and fill your FOH roles faster, with people who actually stick.
